I had a friend ask me recently if I thought photographers got mad about drone photography. Do they look at it as cheating? I know there’s definely a stigma regaring cell phones, and I get that. But I think drones are different. Not just because I use one, but because they are used in a totally separate way.

Personally, as a photgrapher who shoots with multiple types of cameras, including mirrorless, DLSR’s, drones, GoPro’s, etc. I don’t see the use as cheating. I see each as a tool that is used differently in different situations.

Each tool provides access to a different perspective, IMHO. Obviously, I’m not going to use a drone for portrait photography, and likewise, I probably won’t be throwing my DSLR out over the river canyon anytime soon.
Different tools for different jobs. Bringing in different tools has given me the opportunity to expand what I am capable of. I have more options, I can access places that maybe others can’t, or I wouldn’t be able to with just a regular camera.

At the end of the day, who actually cares what anyone else thinks in regards to what you use to capture your images, video, etc. What matters is what you feel about it. It’s your art. Your vision that’s being captured. If you want to use an Etch-A-Sketch to capture that sunset, good luck to you!

Where do you stand on this? What are your thoughts? Leave a comment and let me know if I’m just crazy. Until next time, happy shooting, have an adventure, go take a hike, and drink lots of water.
